The New U.S. Administration: How will it affect Talent Acquisition?

On April 3, 2017, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services temporarily suspended (up to 6 months) premium processing for all H-1B visas sending critics from Silicon Valley into a tizzy over the significant blow to science and technology sectors it may have.

However, others believe these revisions are helpful in protecting U.S. workers from being replaced with less expensive foreign talent. With STEM talent in such high demand, the shortage of available talent is sure to cause issues in Talent Acquisition.

Since 2008, there has been a slow, but steady 5% decline of American graduates while the number of students on temporary visas earning STEM degrees jumped 35%. In fact, the number spiked above 200,000 over the last two years. Only about half of those students, however, were granted H-1B work visas (65,000) or STEM-specific visas (50,000) for on-the-job training each year. According to the Pew Research Center, a majority of the foreign college students (568,510 people or 64%) are from Asia.Dr. Steven Linder, Daily News Contributor

Hiring Hurdles: How Are Best-in-Class Workforces Being Built?

84% of surveyed HR pros agree that applicants are lacking the necessary skills, according to the 2016 New Talent Landscape. Couple that with Jobvite’s 2016 findings that 68% of companies are increasing their average salary offer to land top talent and you can see the problem. A shrinking qualified talent pool and the demand to increase pay overall, thus widening the gap.
